Forum Topic: Accutane Dosage Inquiry

Posted by: CuriousSkinUser

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this medication called Accutane. My dermatologist prescribed it for severe acne, but I’m a bit confused about the dosage instructions. Can someone help me understand how much and when I should take it? Also, are there any side effects that I need to be aware of?

Thanks,CuriousSkinUser

Hi CuriousSkinUser,

I'm not your doctor, but I can give you some general information. Accutane is a powerful medication used for severe acne cases and works well when taken as prescribed.

For dosage, it really depends on the severity of your condition, your weight, and how your body reacts to it. Typically, doctors start with a lower dose, like 0.5 mg per kilogram of body weight, and might increase it over time. The usual maintenance range is between 1-2 mg/kg/day.

It's usually taken once or twice daily with food. Make sure you check the prescription label or consult your dermatologist for exact instructions tailored to your case. And yes, Accutane has some side effects like dry skin, lips, and eyes. You might also feel more sensitive to the sun. There are other potential serious side effects as well, so it’s crucial to have regular follow-ups with your doctor.

Hope this helps a bit!

Thanks DermNinja for such detailed information! I will definitely keep all of these points in mind. My dermatologist mentioned taking it twice daily with meals, so that matches what you said. Do you have any tips on managing the side effects? Like, how can I take care of my skin while on Accutane?

You're welcome CuriousSkinUser!

Managing the side effects is crucial for a more comfortable experience during your treatment.

For dryness:- Use a humidifier in your home.- Apply moisturizer frequently, especially after washing your face or hands. Look for products that are fragrance-free and non-comedogenic to avoid clogging pores.- Lip balm can help with chapped lips, and you might consider using artificial tears if your eyes feel dry.

Sun protection:- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily.- Wear protective clothing like hats and sunglasses when outside.

It's also important to stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Your dermatologist can provide specific recommendations based on how you’re feeling during the treatment.

Remember, it’s essential to discuss any new symptoms or concerns with your healthcare provider regularly.

Good luck, and take care!

Hey CuriousSkinUser,

DermNinja’s advice is spot on! I went through a similar experience with Accutane about two years ago for my severe acne. Staying consistent with the dosage and following up regularly with my dermatologist was key.

For dry skin, I found that using ceramide-based moisturizers really helped keep the irritation at bay. Also, remember to be patient as it might take a few months before you start seeing significant improvements in your skin.

And don't forget to avoid any form of tanning beds while on Accutane! It’s important for everyone taking this medication to know that sun exposure can increase sensitivity and risk of side effects.

Stay positive and keep checking in with your healthcare team. You got this!
