Forum Title: Prednisone for My Dog - Dosage Questions!

Nick1234

Hey everyone,

I hope someone can help me out here. I have this adorable golden retriever named Max who has been having some issues with allergies and itchy skin. The vet prescribed him 5mg of prednisone, but I’m a bit confused about the dosage and how often to give it to him.

Does anyone here know much about giving dogs prednisone? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Nick1234,

I've been through this with my own dog. Prednisone is commonly used for a variety of conditions in dogs, including allergies and skin issues like yours. For the 5mg dosage, it usually depends on your vet's instructions, but typically, you would give it once or twice daily.

It’s really important to follow what your vet has prescribed though. Make sure to ask them specifically about how many times a day Max should take his medication and if there are any special considerations for giving the medicine with food or not.

I hope this helps!

Thanks so much, DogLover87! That’s really helpful information.

Actually, I did have another question. How long does it typically take to see improvement in my dog's condition after starting on prednisone? And are there any side effects that I should be watching out for?

Hello Nick1234,

Great questions! Typically with allergies and skin issues, you might start seeing an improvement within a few days. However, every dog is different, so it could take a bit longer in some cases.

Regarding the side effects of prednisone, there are a few common ones to watch out for:

  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Appetite increase which can lead to weight gain if not managed
  • Lethargy or increased activity level (depending on your dog)
  • Gastrointestinal upset like diarrhea or vomiting

In rare cases, prolonged use of prednisone could lead to more serious issues such as Cushing’s syndrome. It’s important to keep an eye out for any changes in Max's behavior and health.

Always consult with your vet if you notice anything concerning or have further questions about his treatment plan.

DogDoctor9, thank you so much! That was really informative. I'll definitely be keeping a close watch on how Max reacts to the medication.

One last question - can I just give him the entire 5mg pill, or should it be split up somehow? The pill looks pretty big for such a small dose!

PetNurse10

Hi Nick1234,

The size of the pill doesn’t always reflect its dosage. For a 5mg tablet, you can usually give the whole thing to your dog as directed by your vet. It’s important not to break or cut the pills unless specifically instructed otherwise because doing so could alter how they work in your pet.

If you're concerned about Max swallowing the pill, there are tricks like hiding it in his favorite treat or using a pill pocket. Your vet can also give you some tips on making medication time easier for both of you!

Nick1234

PetNurse10 and everyone else, thank you so much for all your help! I feel much more confident about starting Max on the prednisone now.

I’ll be sure to follow through with my vet’s instructions and keep an eye out for any side effects. And maybe some extra treats will make this a little easier for Max!

Thanks again, everyone!

DogDoctor9
