Forum Title: BBG Accutane - My Journey & Questions (Open Forum)
Posted by: SunShineBee
Hi everyone,
I'm here to share my experience with Accutane and also hoping for some advice. I've been dealing with severe acne for years, and my dermatologist suggested starting on Accutane. It's scary but also hopeful since it could change everything.
Has anyone else gone through this treatment? Any tips?

Hi SunShineBee,
Thanks for sharing your journey! I'm a doctor who has worked with many patients on Accutane, and I'd be happy to help. It's great that you're reaching out for support.
Accutane can indeed make a huge difference in severe acne cases, but it does come with some side effects that we need to watch out for. Have you had any specific concerns or noticed any changes since starting the medication?

Hello DrSmoothie,
Thank you so much for responding! I'm definitely feeling a bit anxious about potential side effects and how it might affect my overall health.
I've started taking it last week, and already, my skin feels dry. Is this normal? Also, are there any foods or habits I should avoid to make sure it's as effective as possible?

Hi SunShineBee,
Dry skin is one of the most common side effects of Accutane, so you're absolutely on track with what to expect. Using a good moisturizer can really help alleviate this dryness.
As for your diet and habits, there are a few things to keep in mind:1. Avoid Alcohol: This is non-negotiable as it can interfere with the effectiveness of Accutane.2. Vitamin A Levels: Since Accutane is a form of Vitamin A, you need to be careful about taking any supplements that contain Vitamin A (like cod liver oil or multivitamins) as this could lead to toxicity.3. Sun Protection: Protect your skin from the sun as it will be more sensitive while on Accutane.
It's important to follow up with your dermatologist regularly so they can monitor your progress and any side effects you might experience.
How about checking in with a list of what you've noticed? It would help me give more specific advice.

Thank you, DrSmoothie! I'll make sure to avoid alcohol and check my vitamin intake.
I'm also worried about potential changes in mood or depression since I read some things online. Should I be concerned about this?

Hi again, SunShineBee,
That’s a valid concern as there have been reports of mood changes associated with Accutane use. However, it's important to note that the research on this is mixed and more studies are needed.
If you notice any significant changes in your mood or if you start experiencing symptoms such as sadness, irritability, or loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy, please speak up! It’s crucial to let your doctor know so they can assess whether it might be related to the medication and provide appropriate support.
For now, just keep an eye on how you're feeling overall. Most people do well with Accutane and experience fewer side effects than expected.
Keep us updated on your progress!

Hey SunShineBee,
I’m also on Accutane and have found that using a gentle cleanser and a really good moisturizer has made a big difference with the dryness. It’s tough at first but totally worth it if you stick to it.
Hope things go well for you!
