Forum Title: Accutane Prescription & Payment Options
Posted by: CuriousCat123 (Newbie) - 09/26/2023 10:45 AM
Hi everyone,
I’ve been dealing with severe acne for years and have finally decided to talk to a dermatologist about getting Accutane. My doctor said I could be a good candidate, but when it came time to pay, the only option was Mastercard. Is this common? Can anyone share their experience?

Hi CuriousCat123,
Thanks for your question! It’s important to clarify a few things regarding the prescription of Accutane and payment methods.
Accutane is a powerful medication that has been shown to be highly effective in treating severe nodular acne. However, it comes with strict guidelines due to its potential side effects. Your dermatologist will need to evaluate your medical history thoroughly before prescribing it.
Regarding the Mastercard issue, typically, doctors' offices and pharmacies accept various forms of payment including debit cards, credit cards, and sometimes even cash or checks for prescriptions. It sounds unusual that only a Mastercard was accepted.
Is there any specific reason why they only accepted this type of card? Were you informed about possible alternative payment methods?

Hi DermDoc42,
Thank you for your response. I'm not sure why only a Mastercard was accepted; the office staff didn’t provide any additional details. They just said it had to be paid via that card.
I don't own one, and my bank doesn't issue them either. So, I’m stuck here. Is there anything else I can do? Could they accept another type of payment later?

Hi CuriousCat123,
I understand the concern. It’s unusual for a medical office to only accept one specific brand of credit card unless there are some unique processing requirements or agreements with their financial services provider.
Here are a few steps you can take:
Contact Your Doctor's Office: Reach out again and ask why Mastercard is the only accepted method. Often, they may be flexible if you explain your situation.
Alternative Payment Methods: Ask if there’s any possibility to pay via another credit card or perhaps even a debit card. Some offices have flexibility depending on their billing system.
Online Pharmacies: If your doctor's office is adamant about Mastercard, consider using an online pharmacy that might be more accommodating with different payment methods. Make sure they are reputable and follow all local laws regarding prescription medications.
Patient Assistance Programs (PAP): Depending on your financial situation, there may be programs available to help cover the cost of Accutane. Your dermatologist or a pharmacist should have information about these resources.
Insurance: Check if Accutane is covered by your health insurance plan and whether it requires prior authorization or has specific copay amounts. If so, you might not need to pay upfront with any particular card.
It’s important to resolve this payment issue as soon as possible since timely treatment can be crucial for managing severe acne. Good luck!
